The Slap

the slapIf you want a book to bang you about the head with some big issues, have a read of Christos Tsiolkas’ The Slap.

Christos doesn’t tread lightly in this one. Presented with their actual thoughts, the characters come across as liars, deeply flawed, selfish, and nasty pieces of work. But aren’t we all?

I’m going to say more about this one… just need to digest it a little.

Somehow, this one really made me think about manhood.

#New thoughts:

In some ways The Slap is a massive slap in the face to modern parents and the new ager types (including maybe me in some ways!). I might need to read/listen to the author’s explanation himself, but to me he seems scathing of modern parents who are too one-eyed in their devotion to their child. He’s also scathing of men like the ‘wimpish’ Gary, who is portrayed as being emasculated in his devotion to his wife and child.

What do others think who have read it?
